Greetings from Gareth Jones
Sandiway Golf Club, PGA Golf Professional

An unusual weekday finish on the PGA Tour saw Rickie Fowler take the Deutsche Bank Championship away from Henrik Stenson, two golfers who are certainties for next year's Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. With under a year to go until the event itself, we all start to wonder who will make the final cut, it is scary to think that Team USA's 12 golfers can be entirely made up of golfers in the top 23 of the world rankings - and the lowest ranked of those is Phil Mickelson at 23!!!

Obviously the teams aren't wholly decided on rankings but to put things into perspective, Team Europe's 12th ranked golfer is currently David Lingmerth at 40th.

For me, it is all about the Captain's picks - with next year's event over in the USA, I'd be reluctant to pick too many European Tour-based players due to a lack of experience over in the States. Instead, I'd be tempted with the likes of Russel Knox and Carl Pettersson, both attendees of college in the States as well as playing the majority of their golf on the PGA Tour circuit. No matter who takes to the course at Hazeltine, it is sure to be another mouth-watering spectacle.

Disaster for Wales!

There was some disastrous news for the Welsh Rugby team just ten days before the start of the World Cup, with both Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb ruled out of the tournament after injuries in the final warm up match against Italy. Not only that, but the football team will have to wait a little longer to qualify for the 2016 Euro Championship after only managing a draw at home against Israel.

Pros news

I played in the 1836 Tour on Tuesday as it was played here at Sandiway, and although I was a little disappointed with my one over 71, in which I had three twos, including this tap in on 18 seen in the image, I did not expect to be seven shots behind the winner.

It was another great round from Sam Connor as he shot a five under par 65 to finish second. The course and the weather was fantastic and all the Professionals that I spoke to, rated the condition of the course as one of the best they have played this year.

Competition news

The first round of the Autumn Meeting on Saturday saw 22 players within four shorts of the lead in what were dry but breezy conditions. Gary Peters is the man who everyone is chasing, and shot a nett 68. The best gross of the day was by Jaime Thompson with a one over par 71.

The top 16 gross scores will qualify for the Club Championship the following weekend. The twos for the 1st round paid a very nice £9.81 and has been credited to your account.

The final of the Bennett foursomes was won by Fiona Hornby and Ruth Elliott Smith, beating Ruth Metcalfe and Julie Shankey 3/1. Congratulations Ruth & Fiona on your win.

Carol Liversidge won the Ladies weekend medal with a net 71, she also took the honours in the gross.

Coaching news

Our junior program continues to grow at Sandiway and we now have three separate group sessions running on a Saturday morning. These sessions are structured and follow a clear program, all equipment can be provided and they are open to both girls and boys from 4 years, the sessions run for an hour and are £7 per week.

If you require any more information or would like to book onto the sessions, please do not hesitate to pop into the shop or click here and ask Sandiway juniors all reaching their Silver Award this week.

New Callaway in store

The new Callaway MD3 Wedges have arrived in the shop, and after the success of the MackDaddy 2, I am confident that the MD3 will be even better.

Callaway have devoloped three unique grinds to suit the shots you hit, the courses you play and the swings you make. It's the versatility and selection you need to get up and down from anywhere.

W-Grind: A slightly wider sole. It's perfect if you play in softer conditions or you come in with a steep angle to the ball. And it's extremely playable out of all types of bunkers.

S-Grind: The most versatile option. It's great for a wide range of conditions (normal, soft or firm), shot types, and swings (moderate to sweeping attack angles).

C-Grind: Designed for firmer conditions and versatility around the green. The heel and toe relief allow for a number of shots, especially opening up the face and keeping the leading edge low.

Click here to come in store and see how we can help you.

Golf Care

Are you taking a risk?

Every time we hear someone say they don’t have golf insurance, we wince. The potential costs associated with injuring someone with a stray shot, for example, should be enough to make you think about taking out a policy. We can help find a suitable policy that covers you with our recommended insurance provider, Golf Care, here…
