Greetings from Gareth Jones
Sandiway Golf Club, PGA Golf Professional

So what did you make of The Open this year? After the inclement weather on Friday and Saturday, we found ourselves with only the second Monday finish in Open Championship history. We had an amateur in the final group on a Sunday, we had Spieth going for three majors in a row, Oosthuizen playing some fantastic golf, but in the end it was American Zach Johnson who came through a three man playoff to claim his second major.

Our Chairman Frank Harding would have been very happy with that result as he picked Johnson in the sweepstake and therefore was credited with a £100 shop voucher. To see the rest of the sweepstake winners, click here

The ever popular Tommy Gardner Trophy was played on Saturday and a fantastic 74 pairs ventured out.

Once again the weather was a little on the cold side for the time of year and a strong breeze tested all the members.

It is a competition that as you know the Professional and assistants can play, it was great to be out there with the President, Steve Watson the past President, Ron White and my partner for the day Martin Loftus.

I managed to putt off the green on the 1st hole which shows how quick the greens were on the day.

Martin and I could only manage 37 points and not a single birdie between us.

But we did manage to take a pound off Steve and Ron.

To the business end of the competition and it was Don Ackerley and Richard Allen who won the competition with a fantastic 44 points, three points clear of their nearest rival. I am sure Richard Allen will be a popular choice of partner in future pairs events, after already winning the Allen Trophy back in May with Joe Stimpson.

The winners of thirty years ago were second with 41 points, Berth Frith and his son Simon... a great achievement, who also managed to a couple of twos. Neil Thomas and partner William Forsyth were third beating four other pairs on a better back nine after five pairs finished with 40 points.

It was only a matter of time before these two became single figure golfers, and it happened on the same day. A net 66 for both in the midweek medal. It was Nathan Danskin who pipped good friend Cameron Cross on the back nine and sees both of them now down to 8. Both are turning into great golfers and great for Sandiway Golf Club to see.

I must mention a fantastic score of 66 from Shaun Mills, who plays off a two handicap going out in a flawless 31, and returning a gross 68. But unfortunately Shaun's back nine was the worst of the three 66. In division two Paul Halewood took the honours with a nett 69, John Delaney was second with a 71. The twos for the day paid a very nice £9.74.

The Ladies had a fantastic day at Hillside on Tuesday for their exchange day, it was also very nice to hear so many positive comments about our course from their members, and I truly believe there are not many courses in better condition than our own at the moment.

Back at Sandiway on Thursday and I must start with a big congratulations to Jane Johnson on achieving her first hole in one on the 3rd Hole. Well done Jane, one of golf great feelings seeing your first hole in one.

The Silver Division was won by Carol Liversidge with a very impressive net 69, three shots clear of Barbara Laird who went round in only 73 shots for a net 72. In the Bronze division Alison Barber won with a net 72 four shots clear of Ann Fairbrother.

Congratulations to Dorothy Lamour on being named as Vice Captain to Kay Taylor next year.

I played in the first ever Delamere Pro-Am on Tuesday, and after a couple of bad weeks it was nice to play well again, and happens so often the last Professional in beat me by a single shot, but a tied 2nd finish and shooting under par again was pleasing.

The team of Clayton Danskin, his son Nathan and my Dad made up the team and I couldn't believe that our -13 score in very breezy conditions was not good enough to win, but after a two and a half hour wait in the clubhouse, yet again the last card pipped us by a single shot.

This did not spoil a great day, and a big thank you to Clayton, Nathan and my Dad.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Callaway Demo Day on Wednesday. The weather wasn't what we would of liked but this did not stop many members taking the opportunity to try the latest Callaway products. I will let you know of any more demo days coming up.

Latest PING irons Coming Soon to Sandiway

PING GMax irons

The brand new PING G-Max iron is engineering at its very best with COR-Eye Technology, a revolutionary design that increases face flexing for faster ball speeds across the face to generate incredible distance. The wide sole design positions the CG low/back to maximize forgiveness. Progressive lengths and lofts are optimized for efficient gapping with the distance control and high trajectory you need to hit and hold more greens.

The new cavity structure houses a concealed Custom Tuning Port that connects to the sole. With this deeper position, each iron's CG is lower and farther back for extreme forgiveness and higher launch. The wide sole design positions the centre of gravity to maximize forgiveness, leading to shots that launch higher and land softly. An enhanced leading edge, more trailing-edge relief and refined bounce optimize turf interaction and ensure solid contact.

PING iSeries irons

The iseries iron is custom-engineered with 431 stainless steel for its high strength-to-weight ratio and softer feel, the weight savings from the 431 steel and the deeper CTP position allow for expanded perimeter weighting in a head design that delivers workability and trajectory control with forgiveness. Larger head sizes and low/back centre of gravity positions in the long irons ensure forgiveness while inspiring the confidence to attack greens from longer distances with shots that launch high and land softly.

The smaller short irons and wedges provide precision and control. Lengths and lofts are optimized to increase distance with proper gapping. The sole glides through the grass with ease, ensuring the solid contact required to play with control and consistency. Additional bounce delivers exceptional performance in all conditions.

Hope you all enjoy the weekend and the rest of the newsletter.
