Welcome to this week's newsletter, bringing you all the latest news and offers from here at Sandiway Golf Club. It has been another crazy week here at Sandiway which can be expected for July, if we are not busy in July then we will never be busy. We hope you're having a great week on and off the golf course. Enjoy the read! |
What a Weekend! The final of the Cricket World Cup started at 10:30 am pretty tamely and there’s no way anybody could have predicted the outcome, chasing down a good number of runs in the final over the Wales & England cricket team did the unthinkable and managed to scramble a draw, albeit largely down to Ben Stokes and the black caps throwing four runs…never mind! A super over entailed with which England duly won to win the Cricket World Cup. The first country in the WORLD to have won the Cricket, Rugby and Football World Cup, what an achievement. Whilst all this was going on, the TV remote was starting to get tired having been constantly flicking between Djokovic and Federer’s manic match, the playoff on the European Tour as well as Lewis Hamilton winning the British Grand Prix for a record sixth time. If you didn’t love Sport before Sunday, you most certainly do now. |
Tommy Gardner Trophy On Saturday 174 players took to the course to take part in the popular Tommy Gardner Trophy. It is one of the few competition us in the Pro Shop are allowed to take part in and compete for the win. In the long history of the competition a professional has never actually secured the win, but 2019 nearly changed all that. I would love to say it was myself with our current Captain, Frank Harding but we could only manage a respectful 40 points. But Matt and Lyndon finished on 43 points and getting beat only on a better back 6 from Jonathan Kell and Ed Pearson. |
|
Also on 43 points were Paul Brown and Colin Meadows and completing the prizes in 4th was Peter Heyes and hot in form Ian Philps with 42 points. The twos paid £8.22 and have been credited to your account. |
Ladies Okell Cup
Following this on Sunday was the Ladies Okell Cup, 32 ladies played with, Meg Sumner having producing a great round of golf for a gross 72, nett 70 and winning the Okell Cup by 4 shots from Elizabeth Scott who beat Sally Brown and Lucy Nicholls on count back. Well done to all Ladies who took part.
Midweek Medal Midweek Medal on Wednesday once again had a fantastic turnout with just shy of 100 competitors. Graham Sayers had a fantastic score of 66 to take the spoils which included 2 twos. In second place was Ian Phillips with a 67 which is really showing that his hard work is paying off after a series of lessons from Matt. Dave Garnett, Mike Vernon, John Andrews and once again beating his age, Bert Frith all finished T3rd on a score of 69. The twos have also been credited to your account and are worth £8.06. |
Staysure Regional Qualifier It’s been all go as you would expect for July. Dave Simpson and I represented Sandiway last Thursday at Manchester Golf Club in the Staysure Regional qualifier. We got off to a great start with David birding the 1st with a shot. But no birdies on the two par 5’s from myself saw us turning at 21 points. 19 points more on the back 9 totalled 40 points and we finished mid table, five points behind the winners. Thank you David for your efforts and I hope you enjoyed the day. |

Charity Pro-Am It was then on to a Charity Pro-Am at Wilmslow on Friday, playing with the England cricket legend Michael Vaughan a day after the Wales & England cricket team had qualified for the World Cup Final was always going to be a great day but to win the team event with a -16 score was even better. As mentioned earlier The Captain and I could only manage 40 points on Saturday in the Tommy Gardner to finish 3rd in the bragging rights contest after Nathan and Dan Gibson managed 41 points and Matt and Lyndon 43 points. Never mind Captain plenty more bragging rights for us to come. |
|
PGA Fourball Championship And now for the best part of the newsletter, after two years of near-misses, Matt and I qualified for the PGA Fourball Championship on Thursday after shooting a -5 (66) at Pleasington we then had the nightmare of a sudden-death playoff with six other pairs fighting for five spots. But we eventually got thru on the second extra hole and we are now off to Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey at the end of August. I can honestly say that I am delighted to have qualified with Matt. |

Away at Silloth As mentioned last week, we love how many times we go away playing with members at different courses, and it doesn't get much better than a couple of days at Silloth in glorious sunshine, even if the seagulls outside the Golf Hotel were having an argument at 3am. A big thank to all 8 members for a great couple of days, even better was winning on the second day with fellow Evertonian Paul Brown and Mike Barber. |
5 Rounds in a Day Don’t forget that on Thursday 8th August, my two assistants Matt and Nathan will be playing 5 rounds of golf in one day.....yes that's 90 holes in one day!! The reason for the challenge is to try and raise as much money as possible for the Captain’s Charity, which is The Peter Alliss Masters charity. Click here if you would like to donate |

The Open Sweepstake The popular sweepstake is full just in time for the start of the fourth major of the year, The Open. I hope you are happy with your picks if not, don't worry as there are plenty of prizes for worst rounds of the day. |
Complete Putting Solution Hopefully, you will have reaped the benefits of being professionally fitted for your driver or irons by now - if you haven't, you're really missing out. But why would you get fitted for those clubs but not your putter; especially when you consider it is the most used club in your bag? Simply pick up a few models in the shop and having a few waggles with them until you randomly pick one that you prefer the look of isn't going to have you holing more putts anytime soon (unless you're incredibly lucky). Instead, come and have a conversation with us and we will offer our expert advice as to which putter is best for your stroke: - Blade or mallet?
- Standard length or shorter/longer?
- Single sightline or double?
The questions go on and on, but we can help you answer them all. In fact, here's what we'll do. Until the end of July enjoy a FREE putter fitting and a FREE putting lesson with selected putter purchases in-store. This is a fantastic offer and sure-fire way to improve your game with the short stick. Click here to get in touch with a member of the team |
Golf clothing has come a long way from the old-style knickerbockers worn in the early 1900s - you can hardly imagine popping to the supermarket in a pair of those today. Fortunately, these days, golf brands make clothing that is high performing on the course but looks good enough to set the trend off it too. |

Take this polo from Galvin Green, which has really caught our eye this season. The yellow and black design drips a classy yet modern look that is so versatile it is guaranteed to be something of a head turner away from the course as well as on it.
