Six Year Anniversary 1st April 2013 - the day I took over from Bill as the Head Professional at Sandiway Golf Club, and therefore on Monday, 1 April 2019 I celebrated my six year anniversary as the Head Professional. Hard work has gone into the shop to make it as easy and as competitive as possible for your golfing needs. I must admit that this Monday was a little different to previous anniversaries as the news of Terry Oates passing away hit us all hard. Terry was my first Captain when I took over, a good customer and more importantly a great friend, even though I moaned at the time, I wish I could smell that cigarette again when he used to walk into the shop with the cigarette in his mouth. |
I have had some great memories over the last six years and hopefully many more memories to come. Maybe my golf isn't as good or competitive as it used to be, but I still love getting the clubs out from time to time, I just need a few more "GDJ" balls these days. |
The last 12 months success would not have been possible without the help of Matt and Nathan, not to mention all you members for your help and support over the last six years. So let’s hope the next six years is as good as my first. |
Sandiway Cup What a fantastic response to the Sandiway Cup, I am delighted to say that the event is full with a great mixture of members. I will need £100 deposit by the 14th April to confirm your place. I know you all want to be in team Jones, but the draw for the teams will be done in the summer. Have a look at the video to get you in the mood. |
Captain & Pro Challenge You just never know in golf, One Up standing on the 17th tee, and I hit my tee shot onto the green. Game, set and match is what you are all thinking. No, I picked my ball up before even putting for my eagle. Steve Lawrence holed his second shot for a 2 nett 1 and we are back to all square. We managed to half the last to finish with an honourable half. |

Weekly Round Up The first major of the year was played on Saturday, the Demuth Candlesticks. I am sure it was a little bit of a shock playing off the white tees, but still the scoring was impressive with Brian Cooper taking the honours with 42 points. Brian Johnson finished second with 40 points, with Dirk Scheland and Liam Gobin finishing 3rd & 4th. Helen Close continued her great form winning the Silver Division with 39 points on Thursday finishing four points clear of Dawn Hart. Well played Helen. Helen Halewood won the Bronze Divison with 39 points finishing four points clear of Alison Green. Claire Mycock was delighted with her 37 points on Sunday to win the Stableford by three points from Carol Dodd in second. |
WGC Matchplay An exciting final round of the Match Play capped off another WGC event this week. How refreshing it is to have a different format to the usual strokeplay. It was Kevin Kisner who was eventually victorious in a 3&2 win over Matt Kuchar. It was two finals running for Kisner who this time around got the job done, and I wouldn’t mind being a dollar behind him now. The big story however was the round of 16 where Tiger Woods met fellow TaylorMade Staffer Rory McIlroy in what was touted as the match of the event. It didn’t disappoint with Woods making early birdies and eventually holing a clutch putt on the 17th from 15ft to close out the match. Needless to say Rory was disappointed as he didn’t even stop for the media post round interviews. With all that said, we are a week closer to the Masters who will be wearing the Green Jacket at the end of next week? Click here to let us know your thoughts. |

A Tough Day It was a tough day for Nathan in his first Professional event, as he shot 83 in Huddersfield in the Yorkshire Assistant Championship. He will learn and bounce back from this and will become a great golfer and Professional. He said that he had never been so nervous on the first tee, this can only be a positive and something he will relish in future events. |
Boa constrict your footwear |
There's been two major trends in the golf footwear market in recent years: the first is the surge in spikeless shoes, and the other is Boa. So, what actually is the Boa Fit System and is it anything to do with snakes? |
| FootJoy UltraFIT Boa golf shoe
|
|
No, it's nothing to do with snakes. Phew. Rather, the Boa Fit System has revolutionized footwear for the better and we absolutely love it. Instead of using traditional laces, Boa utilises a steel wire (virtually unbreakable) that is effortlessly tightened via an easy-to-use dial strategically placed on the shoe (seen above). To loosen, simply pull out the dial and open up at the tongue. |
With FootJoy's UltraFIT Boa, which is available in-store now, you will be guaranteed a comfortable fit every time safe in the knowledge that your laces will not come undone or get tangled throughout your round. If you haven’t already experienced Boa, then we implore you to come down to the store and try on this fantastic option today - no obligation. |
