Pros news

Anniversary

1st April 2013 - the day I took over from Bill as the Head Professional at Sandiway Golf Club, and therefore this Saturday, 1 April 2017 I will be celebrating my fourth year anniversary as the Head Professional. Hard work has gone into the shop to make it as easy and as competitive as possible for your golfing needs.

I haven't got an exact number but I must of played with hundreds of members since 2013, whether in a friendly 8 holes, a playing lesson, Capt & Pro matches, Lady Captain & Pro matches, or even Pro Ams, and I have loved every minute of if.

Even if I did put three balls in the Manchester ship canal while playing with Frank Harding, Terry Oates and Nathan Danskin in a Pro Am at Lymm, or the 9 I made with John Bird, Clayton Danskin and Paul Day on the 14th at Holywell.

But there are some great memories, three consecutive eagles at St Annes Old Links on the way to winning a Pro Am with Michael Oakes, a course record 64 at Eaton in the Ladies Pro Am and a 65 in the final round of the Welsh National at Royal St Davids, only to then lose in a play off to Simon Edwards

Maybe my golf isn't as good or competitive as it used to be, but I still love getting the clubs out from time to time, I just need a few more balls these days. The four years would not of been possible without the help of Matt, Mike, Nathan, Cameron and of course Mr Reliable, Brendan not to mention all you members for your help and support over the last four years.

So lets hope the next four years is as good as my first.

Thank you all.

Competition news

It was great to see 50 ladies play in the first medal of the year on Thursday, I get plenty of "oh no, not a medal" on a Thursday but a great turn out considering the format. Alison Hunt continued her very steady play by winning the Silver Division with a nett 75, two shot clear of new member Ann Broster. Well played Alison.

In the Bronze division it was Carol Newbrook who came out on top with a nett 76, she came into the shop after her round saying how much better she could of played and wanted a lesson as soon as possible. Well done Carol

Anne Wise was second losing out on a card play off after finishing with the same score.

It was also pleasing to see a good turn out for the weekend stableford, as 15 ladies played a stableford competition. Tracey Sant 36 points was good enough to win by a single point from Julie Dunn. Well played Tracey.

I forgot to mention in last week's newsletter what a fantastic effort the Sandiway team put in against Cheshire. We lost the game 10-8 which is the best point tally since 2011. A great effort considering how strong Cheshire team was.

The team was Ashely Sage, Cameron Cross, Garry Winstanley, Chris Harrison, George Asteriades, Jaime Thompson, John Andrews, Michael Kelsall, Nathan Danskin, Shaun Reid, Tom Duncald and the first team captain Grant Little.

Captain pro challenge

34 members plus the Captain and I played on Saturday as an end of season get together to thank all the members who challenged us over the last ten months. We played a fantastic 24 matches in total, ending up with a won 12, halved 4 and lost 8 record. We obviously would of liked to have ended up with a better win record but at the end of the day I can not pick my Captain (only joking!!) but more importantly we raised £665 for the Captain's Charity which is a great effort.

The weather was fantastic on Saturday, and it was the father and son combination of Mike and Josh Booth who came out on top with 43 points, two points clear of our Vice Captain and Garry Neiles, while John Bird and Clayton Danskin were third with the same score. It turned out to be a great day for Josh as he won the shot of the year for his efforts from the fairway bunker on the 7th to six feet. Well done Josh.
