Not many golfers in the world can say that they have gone around the famous Royal Birkdale in under par, but that's exactly what Cameron Cross did in the Birkdale Junior Open last Friday.
Playing off a handicap of four he produced a fantastic round of golf that included five birdies and three bogeys for a gross 70 nett 66. With 118 junior golfers taking part he won the best nett by four shots and was tied best gross. A fantastic achievement Cameron, well done.
Nathan Danskin also played in the event and finished with a nett 74, for a tied 14th finish.
Due to course maintenance which I must say is recovering well, I only have the one competition to mention, which is the Ladies weekend team of 3 competition from Sunday.
Phillippa Ward, Janine Corculio and Tracey Freedman won the event with 72 points, three points clear of Carol Dodd, Alison Green and Julie Smyth.
While on the subject of Competitions just a quick reminder that Matt and I will be doing a "Beat the Pro" challenge on the 18th this Saturday for Captain's Day. The forecast is looking promising, so I will keep my fingers crossed.
It was nice to finish 3rd in the Hawarden Pro-Am last Thursday, but could of been so much better with 17 greens in regulation hit, I would of hoped for a better score than 71. Playing with Tom Carroll, Paul Hardy and Eric Hughes we struggled a little as a team and ended up 19th in the team event. And even worse we had to pay Matt's team of Michael Oakes, Nathan Danskin and Cameron Cross £6 as a little side bet we lost.
Matt ended with a 77 which placed him in 17th place while in the team event they narrowly missed out on third place by a single shot!
It has been a tough week for the Captain and I as we lost both our Captain & Pro Challenges, firstly we came up against a very good David Cross who nearly played as well as his son Cameron (Nearly Dave!) and Andy Hulse, they were 9 under better ball at the end of their round as they beat us 4&3. To make matters worse for the Captain, Chester City lost their opening game of the season 3-0.
We then played
Paul Murray and
Keith Metcalfe in a foursomes match and I now know why this paring are in the semi final of the Foursomes Competition, they played very steadily and although the Captain and I won the 15th, 16th and the 17th to reduce the score to one down, a fantastic bunker shot on the last by
Paul was enough to win the match one up. We are certainly on a bad run, but luck will change very soon I hope.
How many of you have said when you've watched Jim Furyk
"if that guy can be that good with that swing, then maybe there's hope for me, too" Well last Sunday Jim Furyk became the first ever golfer to shoot a 58 in a PGA Tour event, only averaged 275yards off the tee (average of the week was 298yards) he hit every green in regulation and had 24 putts.
A truly fantastic round of golf from a 46 years old, gangly American who takes the club back worse than most swings I see in the Saturday roll up, but Furyk proved once again that the golf ball doesn't care bout your age or what you look like or even how you take the club back. This round was for the grinders. The ones who keep plugging away on the practice ground with the sole objective of getting better.
The eventual winner of the Travelers Championship was my tip for a Ryder Cup wildcard, Scotsman Russell Knox. This win would of done him no harm whatsoever.
